Smelly SAHM-my
I have a critically important question to ask you girls this morning:
Do you absolutely hate getting showered and dressed every day?
I swear personal hygiene has become such an inconvenience for me, especially now that the kids are home for the summer and any structure has flown out the window. Am I the only one who finds it hard to get a bath before lunch?
If I am – well, just carry on with your sweet-smelling, made-up self. If I’m not, what time is it before you typically get freshened up?
I’m truly hoping y’all are going to make me feel better here. If it becomes clear after a few comments that I’m just funky, then this post will self-destruct.
In 10, 9, 8, 7, 6……………..
It keeps me on a routine, without it I have no routine….a lot to be said for a daily schedule.
Love ya!
Ok since you’re being real, I will too! I took a shower last night (Tues) and it was the first one I’d had since Sunday AM!!!!!!
I’m sure my husband was relieved!
My 2 older kids are gone with their dad on a trip this week but I still have already developed the summer mentality.
My thoughts are something like, “why do i need to cook, clean, or do laundry? It’s summer!”
I’m crazy, I know!!!
I flip flop on this one. If I could snap my fingers and be all clean and pretty I would. However some days I enjoy taking the time to pamper myself. Other days it is the amount of time and energy that I am avoiding not the thought of being clean. But I freak out at the thought of someone knocking on the door unexpectedly before I am cleaned up for the day and that fear, my dear, is what keeps me “cleaning up” every day.
Thanks for “keeping it real”.
Smiles!
Hate. It. I can’t stand to lounge around in my robe, but I get so tired of the whole routine. And I don’t even have that elaborate of one.
I’ll never forget the dream I had when I was in H.S. or college: I was getting ready for school, washed the hair, dried it, hot rollers, make-up, dressed, the whole shebang. Ready to walk out the door. And the alarm went off. Talk about depressing. I had exerted all that effort in my dream, only to have to start all over!
Swimming counts as bathing, right?
I enjoy cleaning up on the weekends, when I might actually go somewhere besides the accursed Wal-Mart. But the biggest thing is having my husband around to entertain the kids while I’m in there. During the week, the kids are either in the shower with me, or running around the house doing who-knows-what. That’s why I wear a pixie haircut. Any hairdo that requires a round brush is absolutely out of the question. I like to do the grimiest housework before I shower, otherwise I feel all dirty again. So sometimes it’s a little late in the day, usually before lunch though.
On my day off, you betcha…I’m lounging around sometimes until 3 ;) If I’m really bad I don’t shower until the next day. Good grief I didn’t do anything to “perspire” the day before!
Mocha – I’m so sorry! How rude was that?
Your next survey…Hygiene and the Preacher’s Wife. I can read it now :)
Every other day I have to wash, dry, and straighten my hair and I dread it. It takes forever! I kind of got in a groove of doing it before Jackson gets up, but I still wish every day that I was one of those blessed people who could stretch their dirty hair another day without looking like the Exxon Valdez.
Wow — I was going to comment anonymously but then I read some of the comments and you have some REALLY FUNKY PEOPLE hanging out here!!! :)
Most days it is almost lunch before I get my shower only because I do freelance work and I usually have 50 e-mails to respond to before the kids wake up. Then they wake up (today it was 9:50 — SUMMER IS HERE!) and I have to cook and play referree. :) So right now — at 11:02 am CST — I am sitting here with no make-up, no teeth brushed, no hair brushed, my medical scrubs on, and my glasses on — no contacts.
There, I said it!
But let me tell you that my day goes much better when I get right out of bed, shower and get dressed. I feel better and house runs better.
So I aspire, girls — right now I perspire — but I do, indeed, aspire!! :)
Blessings,
Dori
I’m with ya, girl. I have to make myself clean up early. When I do, I feel so much better. Why do you fight ourselves on this one? It shouldn’t be that hard. Maybe we should all get web cams to motivate us???
Kelli
Usually I shower every morning, but today I got my walk in later than normal and still haven’t showered.
I used to struggle with this until I heard a sweet lady in my church say: “We have to get dressed and ready for the day. We may not think we have plans, but we never know what the Lord may have planned for us. Be ready do to His work when He calls.”
That reminded me that my day was not my own. I needed to be ready if someone was to stop by or call and need something. It has happened enough times I know being ready makes it less stressful for me and I can be effective.
Ok you are too funny!
I usually take my shower at night since most of my days are spent at the pool :)
I love summertime!
Kim
Honestly, I have been known to loo in the mirror (for this first time of the day) and throw on a bra as my hubby is pulling in the driveway. Poor man.
I kinda got in a groove with my oldest at pre-school this year. When the baby naps, I shower. But now summer is almost here and the baby is working herself into a one nap a day habit (AFTER school, thank you very much!) and I am stuck!
In other words, I feel your pain!
I still haven’t rolled out of my pj’s … gas costs 4 a gallon … no where to go so why rush a lazy day?
If I don’t have to work….you bet this bod doesn’t get showered until…hmmmmm.say nightish:) lol!!!
They say your mate is attracted by your natural smell…..bunch of hog wash if you ask me:) lol!!!! Cause I stink:) lol!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy your summer & smelly self:)!
hummmm…this hits very close to home! what i hate most about the process is blowdrying my hair…that can be so frustrating especially with the southern humidity we have in Nashville!
I do my best cleaning/houswork in my gown. I may not take a bath until just before school lets out. And if anybody knocks on my door, I just don’t answer it so if you ever come to my house and my car is there but I don’t answer the door you will know I’m cleaning…….
Ya’ll are all just to funky..oops funny. Everyday it’s up and in the shower off to work most days, then to the gym on Saturday, you can’t go stinky is a major rule, why I do not know. Then on Sunday we all have to be bathed and beautiful.
Sallye
School is still going Up North. (Next week is the last week.) So for now, I’m still showering and getting dressed early in the morning. (Before 8:00 AM counts as early to me.)
But by mid-July, I’m usually answering the door at 1:00 PM in my pajamas. I consider it a success any day that I’ve had a shower before I make the kids lunch.
It’s how we roll around here.
Let’s just put it this way, Lisa: It is 2:25pm and I just showered. I will bathe daily (who knows at what time) but this hair washing thing can wait a couple of days – I love my pony tail! With a 5-year-old, 2-year-old and a newborn, I’m just happy to get dressed and run a brush through my hair – you understand.
Hi, I have found you recently through some other blogs, maybe Boomama. And had to comment on this. No kids at home for me & I’m not working outside the home now, so yes, I can relate to not wanting to jump up and do all the getting ready thing. I usually get ready for the gym and then 1/2 of my day is spent in gym clothes after a sweaty workout. I try to run errands on the non-gym days so I can at least look presentable.
I’m a night shower person, so it’s not too bad to get up and get dressed if I absolutely HAVE to get the makeup on early!
I’m planning to participate in your Garden Tour!
Rhoda
Your new design is fabulous!
Showering and summer? They just don’t mix imo.
I’m only successful if I shower before 7:30 a.m. Otherwise I’m generally in any time between 1-3 p.m. lol Gross huh?
It depends! If I’m scrubbing toilets or playing in the garden, then I won’t shower until later in the day when the grimy stuff is over. If I’m just being lazy around the house, I’m OK for the first few hours of the day and then I just feel gross. Gotta have the shower…
I was going to answer but until someone else comes along who is actually going to “be real”, I am reserving my comment!! I cannot believe all you girls obsessed with cleanliness. ha. I know I should have done this anyonymously but, hey I haven’t really said anything, yet!!
Wow! Okay, honestly I go back and forth on this one. About once every few weeks, I stay in pj’s or workout clothes while cleaning or doing laundry. Summer time, If I know were going to the pool, I wont shower in the morning and *yikes am I really going to admit this on a blog*, if i’m totally worn out from being at the pool, or being in the sun I may not shower at all that day, The clorine does wonders for you skin ;) When my hair was long it was much easier, I could just pull into a pony tail or a hat, but now its short, I can’t do that. Today I actually went to walmart in workout clothes, no make up, no hair done. I said a prayer in my car that no one I knew would “bump” into me! Now, i’m in Texas, so actually showers here are priceless in the summer, Even if you just hop and and get wet from head to toe and not really wash. The summer we first moved here, I HAD to shower 2 a day. I couldnt go to bed all sticky from the days humidity. So there you have it. Real as I get!
Tiffintexas
My daughter has been out of Pre-K for a week now, and I am showering less! We are outside playing or inside playing, and although I have typed up a nice routine for us, it’s play clothes- translation- workout clothes all day!
Ok. i am gonna be honest and say…I wish I could stay in my yoga pants and tshirts all the time. I wouldnt change (and most of the time I dont) unless i am having to run to the store and (gulp…I can’t believe I am going to type this…) I dont change for that. I just pray I dont run into anyone I know and if I do, I make a joke about cleaning the house or something…(wish they probably wonder why my house is never clean if they have ever seen it…)I only get dressed on days there are reasons to and if my hair wasnt short, I wouldnt fix it most days. I feel like if I wash my hair and face, I am cleaned up. No matter what i wear. And I bathe before bed almost everynight to help me relax. So, morning showers are unnecessary for me. Though I did freak a little at my “funkiness” when I realized I hadnt brushed my teeth all day. (I usually wait til after coffee and that day I got busy and forgot altogether. ew. gross huh?) fortunately for the public, I never left the house. (DId that mean I have “old lady” breath all day? LOL)
My sweet friend,
I have been working all day on Siesta Fiesta plans and answering emails and then Kim and I have talked a few times today and then my sister called(2 hour convo) and I am still in my jammies, no shower and it is 5:30 p.m. Don’t judge me people. LOL!!!
I did take my shower late last night. I mean bath, I decided to sit in the jacuzzi and soak the funk right off. It was so relaxing. I am 43, I have to apply lotion, moisturizer, eye cream and it takes forever to dry my hair!! I am over it. How fun will this be as we are sharing a room in SA? LOL…wait until you see what my hair looks like in the morning. Don King has nothing on me!!
Love Ya,
Patty
Well you are funky, but there are times where I don’t shower right away! Usually on saturday’s! I have begun to not wear makeup much with my hair in a twist though! My daughter once said “mom you don’t look that good today” This of course after I had been to the Dairy Queen and grocery store! Oh who cares I said, if they see me at church tomorrow they know I clean up good!
I can get more done before a shower, so a lot of times I just keep putting it off until totally necessary!!!
Plus, my hair does better the second day!
Kim
I’ll admit it, I’m right there with ya in the summer. I still have to work one more day, but after tomorrow, I’ll be stinky, too, I’m sure!
My biggest fear is that unexpected visit from that sweet little old lady at church when I’m still in my pajamas mid-day. Hair in a ponytail, no makeup, sometimes braless if I’m particularly lazy that day (admit it… bras are torture and I’ll just say it!). But one visit from that old lady and you know the whole board of deacons is gonna know how ratty you look. And heaven forbid your stink start to linger in the precious parsonage! (As if the smell can distract from the 1970’s wallpaper anyway!). Yep, I’m guilty of staying in my pajamas for way too long. But I try to always wear at least presentable pajamas (like sweats) JUST IN CASE that sweet old lady drops by again. And we all know she will…
I shower every other day (better for your hair). And I usually do it at night before bed because I like to go to bed “fresh”. But during the day I am more focused on playing with the kids and cleaning. I know the shower will wait!!!
I had to come all the way to the bottom here to find someone who showers as little as I do! I usually try to wash my hair 2-3 times a week. It gets really unmanageable if I do more than that, but the sad thing is that since we moved I don’t have a bathtub anymore, & I have issues w/ showering w/o getting my hair wet, so there you have it folks…. 2-3 times a week is all I get. I haven’t been told that I stink yet, so I must be ok…. right? :)
Ok it looks like I am not the only one who sometimes get so busy does not get a shower for a whole day, but trust me the next morning I am up and showering. But I will confess.. I am like you. It just seems to get in the way with everything that needs to get done, and you want to do.
Often times if I do shower every day, it may be 3pm before I hope in! ( I try to beat my husband to the shower before he gets home from work!)
Angie
Yeah, if I don’t have to work, it can be late in the morning…but most of the time it’s right when I get out of bed around 8ish.
Oh, I feel so much better after reading all these comments! I thought I was the only loser who hides when the doorbell rings because I am still in jammies with my hair a mess. I love the way I feel when I’m all prettied up, but hate taking the time to get that way. Glad you did this post….I guess we’re all in this together!
Oh, how I despise getting ready every morning. Normally, I only wash my hair every other day (which also consists of drying and straitning since my hair is naturally curly) but it takes so long. And it’s been so blasted hot here recently I’ve had to do this daily. This is why I miss my long hair because it was so much easier to curl (which took 3.5 minutes) and I was good to go. It doesn’t do that with my short length now. Ugh. I wish I could roll out of bed and go to work some days. Some days I don’t mind pampering, other day’s I mind a bit too much.
Can you tell I’m passionate about this?! This is officially the longest comment ever. I’ll shut my mouth now. Thank you!
I usually can’t get into the shower until around noon…and that’s on a good day…other days, I don’t get in until closer to 2 pm! Oh and there have been days that I go to jump in the shower and my wonderful husband surprises (scares the pee outta me) me by being home! Good thing I was in the shower to clean up the pee!! LOL
I get up very early to work (I write/study at home) but do not “freshen up” until 9am or 10am. If I am on a roll in God’s word I may not hop in the shower until 1130am or later some days.
Interesting question. Now I must read the other comments to see how I fair.
This is my first visit to your blog. See you again soon!
In Him,
Nancy
Working outside the home doesn’t leave much room for nonbathing. Darn.
Well I usually work 4 10hr days so I am up at 3am work out make lunches and then bible studies. then shower and be to work by 6am.
on Friday however after hubby goes to work I stay in grubs till I know he’s on his way home. YES I get tired of the routine, really can we just shower towel dry and go. That would be nice.
Be Blessed,
Lynn
YES—living for the weekends (Saturday) when I don’t have to think about work clothes, makeup or if these shoes go with this outfit.
I get up and shower everyday first thing. It never occurred to me not to! Some days it is a huge effort because of my illness, but never the less, I do it. I have simplified my face and hair routine and that helps. If I get dirty during the day, I have a sponge bath and change clothes, or another shower before bed. I shave my legs quickly every day, because I wear skirts and sandals all summer, pretty much. My family knows that I am really really really sick if I don’t shower – or if I wear track pants! On Saturday, I start brunch and jump into the shower while my dh puts the finishing touches on, so I guess that’s a bit grungy to cook in my bathrobe, but it works for me! I just think it is such a privilege to have the ability to bathe regularly – I never would have made it trekking across the prairies in a covered wagon without a pace to take a bath!
I love this topic! I’m all over honesty! LOL
I’m a home schooling SAHM and I can assure you I’ve had this conversation many times with other Moms.
First of all, I am not a morning person. To me taking a shower = blow drying and styling my hair. Ugh. EFFORT! And effort like that just straight up out of bed? Why I need some coffee and internet time at the very least before I have to do all that much stuff! Night time showers don’t work for me either ’cause again the hair she only cooperates freshly washed.
Also by the time I crawl out of bed I feel I must get straight to the kids school work and house cleaning just to get it all done. Once you have math going on and dishes in the sink your day is started and a shower just simply gets pushed out until later in the day.
I do at least wash my face, touch up the deo, comb my hair and brush my teeth when I get up…. just so I’m not too nasty when the little ol’ lady from church shows up unexpected…(I was soooo glad to hear I wasn’t the only one that happens to.)
To get to the point… yes most days I stay funky until right before my hubby comes home from work. (Sometimes as he comes home) I do try to be fresh by then because even the greatest man around is eventually gonna get sick of coming home to a stinky woman with greasy hair in baggy t-shirts and shorts. Not that I personally ever look that way say on a daily basis unless I go somewhere….
Gee…looking up that is a long comment. TMI?
You see, we homeschool for a reason! No need to get up and get beautiful before noon! The truth is, I can’t hang out in jammies, I’m just not comfortable, so I get dressed right away. But I shower at night…if I have to, lol. I absolutely hate the effort of it, but I love the feeling when I’m finished, and it’s the only 15 minutes during the day when I’m alone.by.myself.without.kids!
