A Spectacular GiveAway
Remember yesterday when I told you I had an amazing surprise for you from a very special pastor/theologian/teacher/author? Well, it’s time to spill before I bust a gut from all the secrecy.
On behalf of Desiring God Ministries, Abraham Piper (John Piper’s son), has graciously offered FIVE COPIES of his father’s book Spectacular Sins: And Their Global Purpose in the Glory of Christ for me to give to you! *squeal*cabbage patch*booty shake*fist pump*whoot whoot*
{So I’m a little excited.}
My first intention was to do a simple giveaway in conjunction with a review. But, the more I thought about it I realized there was no way on earth I could adequately tell you about this book in one 3-4 paragraph post. Truthfully, my adding any commentary to this work would be like giving my Kindergartner a Crayola to color over a Monet. The word ‘injustice’ comes to mind.
The truth is, this isn’t the kind of book that I want to breeze through. It’s one on which I want to feast. Traditionally, one doesn’t sit at a banquet table alone. He or she is surrounded by family and friends which brings me to my next thought.
What do you think about Book Clubbing Spectacular Sins? About discussing it chapter by chapter (perhaps sometimes through live chat?) and truly studying the scriptures in relation to sin and suffering? Girls, it is vital that we become diligent in girding ourselves in knowledge and understanding over these hard questions so that we will always be ready to explain the hope within us. 9 out of 10 times I have the opportunity to talk about the Lord with an unbeliever they inevitably say, “If God is so loving, why do such horrible things happen in the world?” I want to be able to answer that question authoritatively instead of with a string of cliches that find no basis in Scripture. Only when we settle those issues in our own minds will we be able to do the same for someone else. As Piper says, “Knowing great things about God will make us ready not to collapse under cataclysmic conflict and personal catastrophe.”
I want to know those great things. Don’t you? This Book Club will definitely be a No Fluff Zone. We are SMART girlfriends and it’s time we started believing it! Let’s consider great things and build a little muscle in our physical and spiritual noggins. You with me?
{Crossing fingers and hoping you will say yes..}
Okay, first things first.
To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment. No bells or whistles or hoops. You can earn a double entry by linking to the giveaway and leaving a second comment with the post url. I will use a random number generator to choose FIVE WINNERS on Friday, November 7th.

Okay, now we need to consider when to begin…
Alrighty then. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! Again, thank you to Dr. John and Abraham Piper for being so extravagantly generous with this giveaway. Your awesomeness knows no bounds!
p.s. I have to give a special shout-out to my dear friend Brooke who gave me this book for Pastor Appreciation. I’ve already highlighted every other sentence. Good stuff, girls. Good stuff.

I would love to have this book and would love to participate in the book club, but for me, it would have to be after the holidays. I would want to get the most out of it and to do that I have to be honest with myself…knowing that it would be an overload during the holidays.
Sounds like an interesting book. I am looking for a new study to begin after the new year with my group of moms. Wondering if it would be something good for us to do together!
Sounds super! Would love to be a part of a Book club to hear others thoughts.
Sign me up.
This is my busy season with craft shows and such…and I have been thirsting for a good read/study for when I finish those up in December….this sounds like the perfect book for that!!! Thank you for this give-away opportunity!!!
hugs,
Debbie

Greetings, I read your blog often but rarely comment. But today, I HAD to do it. It must be a season or theme of time, (my bible study is doing the book of Daniel right now) I don’t know but I agree this would be a profound study and not for the weak of heart. I expect we’ll probably get a spiritual spanking… or two. I voted to do it after the holidays as well.
I want IN!!!! I need something new to read!
I am really just getting to “know” John Piper!! (I know I know!!!)
Count me in. I’ve never won a blog give-away, but I sure would like to! ;)
I’m on my way to my blog right now to let all my friends know that I’ve entered and link to your page. Thanks

Isn’t John Piper a 5 point calvinist?? They believe in that crazy stuff that God pick and chose before time who was going to get saved. They dont believe in foreknowledge. That is such a sad way to believe.
I linked also.

I’d love to read the book and study with you!! Thanks for the opportunity to pick our brains and grow closer to God in the mean time!!
Great idea to take our minds off the CRAZY political JUNK, not our country, but the JUNK both sided are giving us to chooses from. There is only 1 way to vote (R) in my opinion and our house, We have to stand up for God and the obligations we have to keep and fight for, but enough is enough!! Let’s just vote and get on with the improvements we NEED! How did that happen, me…off track…lol. What I meant to say is, yea, a book club and study…woooohoooo!, sounds fun…I’m in!
Anonymous,
Yes, Piper does describe himself as a Five Point Calvinist.
Here’s what I find: A mature Calvinist such as he does not wave this doctrine like a banner. It is typically the young, impetuous men who feel they need to romp, stomp and debate it. In a man of Piper’s caliber, this doctrine is manifested by a deep-seated assurance throughout his teaching that we are called and held by Christ. That is a belief I hope we all have in common.
There are few theologians whose total views I accept but I believe it is important to sit under many teachers and receive that which is profitable to us personally.
With that said, don’t let being leary of the ‘C’ word keep you from reading this book :) Hope you’ll join the club…:)
Sounds like a great book, awesome giveaway. The online study is a great idea too!
